I stopped in my tracks (aka “scrolling”) as soon as I spotted the photo of Justin Bieber going on a sushi date night with his wife wearing a granny square crochet blanket.

Justin Bieber was in full technicolor with my favorite type of crochet project!

And I immediately started making plans to make the project and to help you make it as well.

What’s so great about this project is that it is beginner friendly. It doesn’t take a lot of skill or experience to be able to make this blanket for yourself.

Abbreviations

ch = chain

Basic Granny Square Pattern:

Beginning with the center color of the granny square

Round 1: Make a slip knot, ch 4, join to top of ch 3 to make a ring

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), make 2 dc into the center of ring (first cluster), ch 2, make 3 dc in center of ring, ch 2, repeat twice more (you will now have four clusters with ch 2 between each), slst to the top of the first ch 3 to join.

Change to Second Color of Square

Round 3: Beginning in any corner, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), make 2 dc in the same corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, repeat three more times in each of the remaining ch 2 spaces from previous round. Slst to the top of the first ch 3 to join.

Change to Third Color of Square

Round 4: Beginning in any corner, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), make 2 dc in same corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, *make 3 dc in ch 1 space from previous round, ch 1, make 3 dc in next corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 3 times. Slst to the top of the first ch 3 to join.

Change to Fourth Color of Square

(For first square only- for each additional square we will be using the join as you go method, which is explained below)

Round 5: Beginning in any corner, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), make 2 dc in same corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1 *make 3 dc in ch 1 space from previous round, ch 1, make 3 dc in ch 1 space from previous round, ch 1, make 3 dc in next corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 3 times. Slst to the top of the first ch 3 to join.

Join-As-You-Go Method

Check out the full video tutorial for the Join-As-You-Go Method. It makes a lot more sense when you can see it in video form, but I have the written instructions here for you as well.

For the 2nd and subsequent granny squares we will be using the join-as-you-go method.

Make the next granny square through Round 4.

Begin Round 5: Beginning in any corner, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), make 2 dc in same corner space, ch 2, make 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1 *make 3 dc in ch 1 space from previous round, ch 1, make 3 dc in ch 1 space from previous round, ch 1, make 3 dc in next corner space STOP…

Now we are going to begin our joining as we go.

Take a finished square and join to that square with a slst (from above the space, bringing up a loop from below) in the ch 2 corner space, ch 1, make 3 dc as normal to finish the corner.

Next, join with a slst into the ch 1 space of the finished square and then make 3 dc as normal.

To join the next side, join with a slst into the ch 1 space of the finished square and then make 3 dc as normal.

For the corner, make 3 dc as normal, slst in the ch 2 corner space of the finished square, ch 1, make 3 dc as normal to finish the corner.

Finish the granny square as normal.

When you reach the point where you will begin joining granny squares on two sides, join in the same manner as before, but when you get to the corner where all three squares will meet, you will slst into each corner space of the two finished granny squares to join.

    1. It’s called that because Justin Bieber went out for a sushi date night dinner with his wife and he had a crochet granny square blanket wrapped around his shoulders. I wanted to make the same blanket and thought it was a fun name! 💞
