It must be because the sizes are doable and the colors are so darn cheerful.

I’ve crocheted each and every one of these six beautiful baby blankets and can’t wait to share all the details with you!

Crocheted Baby Blanket Sizes

According to The Spruce Crafts there are three different crocheted baby blanket sizes. Although I found a lot of different size guides for baby blankets, I like that this one is short and simple.

None of these baby blanket sizes include the border so your finished project will likely end up a little bigger.

Preemie 26″ x 34″

Newborn 30″ x 34″

Toddler 36″ x 44″

Best Yarn for Crocheted Baby Blankets

For crocheted baby blanket you need something that is soft, doesn’t shed and is totally washable.

I’ve tried many different yarns and have found one that I think is absolutely perfect for baby blankets. What’s even better is that it is a widely available yarn and is a great price, especially if you find it on sale.

Stylecraft Special DK

Stylecraft Special DK is my favorite yarn for crocheted baby blankets.

• Affordable – at $3.49 for a 3.5 oz ball, it’s a bargain
• Washable – it’s a 100% acrylic yarn that you can throw in the washer and dryer.
• Soft – such a soft and cozy yarn when crocheted into a blanket
• Doesn’t shed – unlike some “baby” yarns, this one doesn’t shed
• 89 Colors – there are so many gorgeous colors to choose from

Crocheted Baby Blankets I’ve Made

I adore baby blankets and someday when I have my very own grandchildren they will never be without a cozy blanket.

Colorful Granny Square Blanket

I bought the book, Granny Squares: 20 Crochet Projects with a Vintage Vibe because of the cover. I knew I had to make that gorgeous, colorful granny square project.

The circular shaped granny squares are made with three different colors on a white background. How beautiful. I also had a ton of Paintbox Wool Mix Aran yarn that I wanted to use. It’s not the best yarn for a baby blanket, but since I had a ton, I decided I would use it.

I used the join as you go method, which is my absolute favorite way to join grannys.

Each time I finished a square, I had so much fun thinking about what colors I would choose next.

You could also do this in all the same colors, blues for a boy or pinks for a girl.

Another idea would be to choose colors to match the nursery. Or go crazy and use all the colors like I did!

Crocheted Baby Blanket Border

For the crocheted baby blanket border, I referred to the book Around the Corner Crochet Borders by Edie Eckman.

This is a wonderful reference book for all things crochet borders.

I had a hard time choosing exactly what I wanted to do, but #41 won. The first reason is because it didn’t need a certain number of multiples to crochet.

Plus the note detailed that this particular border would have a “slightly ruffled effect”. Ummmmm, yes please. Give me all the ruffles.

The author does offer advice for how to avoid the ruffles if you don’t want them (but who wouldn’t want them???).

Primavera Flowers Granny Square

This gorgeous granny square project is one of my absolute favorites. How could it not be?

What is even better about this blanket is that it’s a free pattern and tutorial on the Dada’s Place website.

She also has a photo tutorial as well.

The blanket is so gorgeous and would be perfect in any nursery.

Sunburst Granny Baby Blanket

One of my favorite crocheted baby blankets of all time was the Sunburst Granny Baby Blanket from the book Vintage Style Crochet Projects by Agnieskzka Strycharska.

I love every single thing about this gorgeous book. Each and every project inspires me to grab my crochet hook and get stitching.

This crocheted baby blanket uses Natura Just Cotton in bright, cheerful colors. It would be perfect for any baby.

Granny Goes Large Crocheted Baby Blanket

I wrote about this blanket around this time last year. My son was in the hospital and I was so thankful that I had a great big mindless project to work on.

It was also the second time I had used Stylecraft Special DK to crochet a blanket.

What I love best about this blanket is that it is so easy to make. You really don’t even need the pattern, once you get the general idea.

Plus you can make it as big or small as you would like in any color combination.

Sunburst Granny Square by Bella Coco Crochet

This is one of the very first blankets that I ever made and it is still one of my very favorites.

Once you have mastered a basic granny square you will be able to move onto something a bit more complicated like this gorgeous square.

I used bright pinks, yellows, corals and teal colors on a white background to make this beautiful crocheted baby blanket.

I also added my favorite bobble stitch for the border.

Harmony Blanket from Attic 24

My final crocheted baby blanket is from the prolific and talented crochet designer, Lucy, from Attic 24.

There is something so comforting about working on a gorgeous and colorful crochet blanket any time of year.

I enjoyed making this project so much that I wrote an entire blog post all about it and I shared all the colors as well.

This was the first time I had ever used Stylecraft Special DK and finally understood what all the fuss was about. There’s a reason that seasoned designers gravitate towards this yarn for making blankets.

And yes, I crocheted this for my baby (her name is Olive and she’s a cat, lol).
