Planning your crochet and knitting goals is a great way to get motivated about your current and future projects. By creating actionable steps you will be able to achieve so much more than you ever dreamed possible. With these simple steps you will know what you’re working towards, but more importantly how to get there.
Goals are great things to have, but unless you have a plan they can be difficult to achieve. With these four simple steps you can not only set your crochet and knitting goals, but have a concrete plan for how to accomplish them.

Make a List of Your Crochet and Knitting Goals
Maybe you want to learn how to knit or crochet.
Or maybe you have been eyeing that new amigurumi pattern, but it looks a little more advanced than your current skill level.
Whatever goals you have, it’s important to make a physical or digital list. Having a concrete, visual representation of the patterns you want to make and the skills you want to learn is half the battle.

Break Each Goal into Actionable Steps
Goals are great, but actionable steps are how you get there.
Take for example the goal of learning how to knit. It’s a fantastic goal to have, but it’s super important to break it into small bite sized pieces.
Here’s how I would break down that goal:
- Find the Youtube videos, online classes or books you’re going to use to learn how to knit
- Gather your materials – get your knitting needles and yarn
- Set aside the time to be able to work on learning how to knit
Acknowledge Small (and Large) Achievements
Take the time to acknowledge your achievements.
When you make the list of your crochet and knitting goals, celebrate that moment. You’re taking action, and that’s something to be proud of.
You don’t have to wait to congratulate yourself until you achieve a really big goal, even small ones count.
Set aside rewards for yourself, if that keeps your motivated. Share your successes on social media with friends or family.
One of the things I did was to start an Instagram account devoted just to my crochet and knitting. It was a way for me to share the things I was making. For so long I believed that I wasn’t creative and didn’t have the talent to be able to knit or crochet. (That’s a whole post on it’s own for another time – crocheting and knitting aren’t talents, they are learned skills).
Find Inspiration to Keep You Motivated
One of the best ways I’ve found for achieving goals is to stay motivated.
When I’m inspired, I want to work towards my crochet and knitting goals.
I get a lot of inspiration from Instagram. There are so many talented makers sharing their work on that platform. One of the best ways to find new inspiration is to follow hashtags.

My Personal Crochet and Knitting Goals
My good friend, Dawn, from the YouTube channel Dawn’s Days, tagged me to share my Top 6 Crochet & Knitting Bucket List Projects. At first I wasn’t sure I could come up with six, but as I sat thinking about it, the waves of inspiration hit and I easily found six that I’ve been dreaming of for quite some time.
These aren’t in any particular order, and while the original bucket list challenge is more about projects to finish the rest of this year, mine is more of a Top 6 Lifetime crochet and knitting goals.

Learn How to Knit Socks
I have wanted to learn how to knit socks for quite some time. To be honest, I’ve been a little afraid to do it because it seems like once someone learns how to do it, that’s all they want to make, lol!
I have all the supplies I need and I’ve signed up for the class. Now I just need to take my own advice and set aside some time to actually learn how to do it.
I’ve been interested in Norwegian knitting since I took the Stranded Knitting course from Patricia from Knitography Farm.

Frida’s Flowers
Frida’s Flowers is a project that is about 1/8 of the way finished and is just sitting in my craft room gathering dust. Initially I stopped working on it because I developed severe tendonitis in my elbow and one of the contributing factors was cotton yarn, which I had purchased for this project.

If you have never seen the gorgeous crochet designs by Janie Crow, you are in for a treat. Each one of her blanket patterns is overflowing with gorgeous color and intricate design.
I fell in love with Frida’s Flowers, because I love all things Frida Kahlo and those colors…. so gorgeous. I love the rich purples, pinks, reds, greens and blues just to name a few. They are all set on a black background.
I need to make a decision to continue working on the project as is, and hope that the cotton will no longer bother me. Or I need to order a completely different type of yarn, like acrylic, so that it is gentler on my joints. I can donate the cotton to some lucky crocheter that isn’t bothered by the natural stiffness of cotton.

I used the recommended StyleCraft Classique Cotton DK and it works up like a dream for this project.
Design My Own Patterns
Another goal of mine is to work on designing my own crochet and knitting patterns.
I’m actually working on two right now, one is crochet and the other is a knit and crochet combo.
I have quite a bit done on both of the designs, but to be very transparent, I’m lacking a lot of confidence about them at the moment.
The crochet design is a set of three different dishcloths. I love them all so very much and they are very much my style. They are a little dainty and more decorative than practical, which is the way I like my projects, lol.
The knit and crochet combo project is a toy. I have been feverishly working on this project and I have high hopes of showing him to you all soon.
My crochet and knitting goal for these projects probably should be more about getting over the fear of rejection and lacking confidence.
Sven & Solveig Scandinavian Knitted Friends
The first time I saw the Sven & Solveig Scandinavian dolls stopped me in my tracks. I was flooded with joy when I saw these two characters and immediately knew they were something I wanted to knit.
This pattern is definitely not designed for the knitted toy making newbie. I imagine one would need to be well versed in toy making as well as fair isle knitting.
You can find the pattern on Ravelry as well as a kit from Barret Wool Co. The kit is currently sold out, but I think I will get on the mailing list to be notified when it’s back in stock.
Lori from the Instagram account LoriTimesFive made the most gorgeous pair of Sven and Solveig that I’ve ever seen! How adorable is this pair? When I asked her if it would be ok for me to share photos of her pair she shared the most amazing story with me:
The Sven and Solveig story is so lovely, the pattern hadn’t been made since the 80s (or at least there were none online that I could find) making them led to ‘meeting’ the designer who is now in her late 80s. Her daughters wrote me to say how thrilled she has been to see the little Scandinavians out in the world once again! The family also had to do reprints of the pattern booklet which was cause for celebration for them! So please do include Carol Anderson of Cottage Creations as well, thank you and God Bless!

The crafting community is such a special group of people and I just love this story and how this resurrected pattern is blessing the original designer decades later.
Knit Like a Latvian
Latvian knitting is full of bold color combinations and geometric pattern repeats and I love everything about it. When I found this book Knit Like a Latvian, I knew it was something I needed in my life.
My goal is to knit a pair for my sweet husband, who I’ve never made anything for, poor guy.
I love that these projects can be customized for any color combination and the designs are so very gorgeous.
Posie Ornaments by Alicia Paulson
Alicia Paulson is one of my greatest inspirations. It was actually her gorgeous crochet crib blanket design that sparked my entire creative revival. An image of it on Pinterest captured my heart plus my imagination and I still love everything about it.
Alicia also has the most darling felt Christmas ornaments. I guess I’ve been on an ornament kick lately. You can read more about the knitted ornaments I’m making for family and friends this Christmas here.
Although they aren’t a crocheted or knitted project, I have to include them in my Top 6 Crafting Bucket List. There are six different patterns and she also has ornament kits.
