Life has been stressful this past year, hasn’t it?
Last week found me in the hospital with my mother, who is now doing much better, thank goodness. Her emergency stay came less than six months after my son’s week long admission which I wrote about in detail in my post:

Instead of doing a tutorial or sharing some of my favorite amigurumi designers, I thought we could take it easy and simply crochet together.

Favorite Yarn and Hooks for Granny Squares
My hands-down favorite yarn for making granny squares is:
It comes in eighty-six delicious colors. While 100% acrylic, it is soft and wonderfully warm. It’s the perfect yarn for blanket making because you can toss it straight into the washer.

Relaxing Garden Tour
Instead of making you just watch me crocheting, I decided to visit a local landmark and give you a little tour.
Memorial Garden is a historic spot in Concord, NC. Locals love to take short strolls through the beautiful gardens every season.
The garden sits on the original site of the First Presbyterian church, which was a log-cabin building, built in 1804. That’s quite old for the United States.
Although the log-cabin church is long gone (rats….I love old log buildings), the property remains under the church’s care.
“Located on Spring Street in downtown Concord, Memorial Garden sits on land purchased in 1804 for the original log-cabin sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. Although the church buildings have long since moved, the garden continues to be a cherished and beloved part of the congregation’s history and heritage. Stone paths wind throughout the church’s 200-year-old cemetery, guiding visitors up and down gently sloping hillsides past ancient oaks, waterfalls, butterflies, sculpted hollies, and intricately carved white Italian marble markers.”

Historic Cemetery
You read that right. The garden is also a cemetery.
I hope that you enjoy old cemeteries as much as I do. They exude tranquility and peace. The inhabitants have no earthly cares and have the luxury of resting in their natural sanctuary. (Can you tell I’m tired??? Lol!)
Many of the grave markers are pieces of art. They are tributes to their loved ones, many of whom passed away too young.
Memorial Garden
While the garden is privately owned, it is open to the public six days a week. The grounds are beautifully kept and are a feast for the senses.
In early spring you will find the fountain garden overtaken by tulips of every color.
“The current chapter of Memorial Garden began in 1930, when Mrs. Sallie Phifer Williamson committed herself to restoring the church’s cemetery as a memorial to her mother. Renaming the plot “Memorial Garden,†she faithfully maintained and improved the grounds until her death in 1937. Her son, Marshal Phifer Williamson, continued his mother’s work on the garden until his own death in 1966. Today, the family’s work and dedication continues through a generous trust endowed by Mr. Williamson to support the garden.”
