Cute Amigurumi Soda & Craft Room Redecorating

Sharing is caring!

It’s been an exciting week around these parts. After months of quarantining at home with little outside excitement, the past seven days have been full of fun. From an amigurumi soda project to some craft room redecorating, it doesn’t take much to make me happy.

When a local soda shop reached out to see if I wanted to create a custom drink for their June menu, I was really excited, but also kind of nervous.

I can follow a recipe, but I’m not known for being super creative in the kitchen. Thankfully, they were able to take my favorite summer flavors and make a combination that is super refreshing and a little decadent all at the same time.

Amigurumi Soda Pattern

Sip Co. is a brave local soda shop that opened right in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. You can create your very own custom soda or they have a specialty menu ready with delicious combinations to choose from.

The owner of Sip Co. came up with two different sodas that combined my love of raspberry and coconut. Ultimately I chose the one with sparkling water, coconut, raspberry puree, frozen raspberries and coconut cream. Yummmmmmm.

Once I knew that we would be working together to create a unique summer drink, I started looking for an adorable amigurumi soda pattern.

I wanted it to look like the beverages they serve at Sip Co. with a white styrofoam cup and signature red pop of color.

It didn’t take me long to find one.

Boba Milk Tea Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Although I’ve been a great admirer of ChiWei of One Dog Woof for quite some time, I had never made one of her patterns.

As soon as I found her Boba Milk Tea Amigurumi pattern, I knew it would be perfect for my little amigurumi soda project.

Next, I knew I would need to adjust the pattern just a little bit to make it look exactly the way I wanted. I made the cup section white, and used a light gray for the top. For a pop of their signature color, I crocheted the straw in red.

Instead of working in seamed rounds, I worked the whole project in continuous spirals.

Yarn for Amigurumi Soda

I used my go-to Paintbox Wool Mix Aran for this project. It’s such a fantastic yarn for amigurumi. With forty-nine gorgeous shades and one hundred and ninety-seven yards, it’s a fantastic value.

Paintbox Wool Mix Aran Colors:

  • Paper White for the cup
  • Misty Gray for the lid
  • Rose Red for the straw

Crochet Hook

My favorite combination for amigurumi is worsted/Aran weight yarn and a 3.5mm hook. It usually surprises people when they learn that I (almost) only use one hook for amigurumi.

My Furls Odyssey hook is my favorite for crocheting toys for many reasons, but these are the most important:

  • the hook is made from strong, smooth metal
  • it has a very pointy head and neck for making neat invisible decreases
  • the ergonomic handle has helped with the elbow tendonitis I developed from crocheting so much

Redecorating the Craft Room

Check out the video above for a little tour of the craft room before and after, as well as hunting for the perfect antique piece.

As if working with a little soda shop wasn’t exciting enough, I decided the craft room needed a teeny tiny makeover. For quite some time I’ve been thinking about adding some rustic touches to my little space.

When I initially took my sad basement laundry room and turned it into a cheerful craft room, my only objective was to bring in a lot of light colored furniture.

Because I needed the room to be space saving as well as able to store a lot of crafting supplies, I purchased almost everything at IKEA.

I love the clean look of all the pieces, but it began to feel a bit sterile to me. My own personal style is a little more rustic and eclectic.

The Depot at Gibson Mill

My favorite place to shop is The Depot at Gibson Mill in Concord, NC. It is an old textile mill turned antique mall. It’s over 88,000 square feet and holds 725 unique booths. You can find anything from old antiques to charming collectibles and everything in between.

I was on the hunt for a new cabinet/hutch for the area behind my desk and chair (which you can see in the YouTube videos). Originally I hung IKEA peg boards in that spot. I thought were going to be very practical as well as cute, but I actually found that I never really used them.

Armed with my handy husband and a tape measure, we headed out in search of the perfect piece that I envisioned in my mind.

The problem when shopping at an antique mall is that it is hit or miss. Some days you find multiple “treasures” that are exactly what you’re looking for. Other days, you walk away empty handed because nothing is quite right.

I knew I wanted something old and rustic. The more chipped up the better.

If it looks like it has been sitting in an old shed for fifty years and has a funny smell, I’m going to love it.

We walked up and down the aisles for a couple of hours. My husband measured dozens of pieces that were good, but not exactly perfect. Either it wasn’t the right size, it was too heavy, or it wasn’t for sale.

As we were getting ready to leave I persuaded my husband (who was more than ready to go home) to go back to my favorite booth for one last look.

The Perfect Piece

And there it was.

She was chipped and dirty and absolutely perfect.

My husband measured the height and width, but I already knew it was “The One”.

As soon as we got it home, I began cleaning it out and adding all my amigurumi, antique toys and granny square blankets.

The final touch was adding a string of fairy lights to the shelves to illuminate the inside. The amigurumi toys couldn’t be happier… and neither could I.
