Sharing is caring!

The Crochet Cottage Christmas Toy Blanket is a timeless keepsake for any handmade (or store-bought) toy. You will find all the information you need in this FREE crochet pattern and video. You can customize the size to make it bigger or smaller for your specific needs.

What could be better than granny squares?

Christmas colored granny squares, that’s what.

I’m a traditionalist at heart. So nothing feels more festive than the combination of the colors red, green and white.

And if this holiday season finds you making handmade toys, adding the Crochet Cottage Christmas Toy Blanket is a lovely accessory.

The great news is that the Crochet Cottage Christmas Toy Blanket uses very few materials and you probably already have some on hand.

I found it really fun to use the exact yarns from the red and white Norwegian sweater and green shorts from my recently knit teddy bear.

The teddy bear and sweater pattern are from Little Cotton Rabbits.

You will also find the tutorial for the final border I made from Daisy Farm Crafts: The Crochet Blanket Dot Border. This gorgeous border gives the final blanket a pop of color and a whole lot of whimsy.

Notes

The pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Make as many or as few granny squares as you need to make the size blanket you want for your toy.

Tutorial for How to Crochet Granny Squares for Beginners

I used two alternating colors, green and red for the centers of the squares, with a white border to match my teddy bear’s Christmas outfit.

Match or coordinate your blanket colors with your handmade toy to create a complete set perfect for gift giving.

Make a little pillow for your toy by making four additional granny squares, joining them and stuffing the inside with Polyfil. Add a decorative border for that finishing touch.

Granny Square Pattern

Make 30 squares (15 green centered & 15 red centered)

Use the green or red color for Rounds 1 & 2. Use white for Round 3

•Round 1: ch 3 and join with a slst to form a ring

•Round 2: Working all stitches into the ring, ch 3(counts as the first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2. Join with a slst to the top of the ch 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

•Round 3: Join white color into any ch 2 space. Ch 3 (counts as a first dc), 2 dc into the same space, ch 1. *Into the next ch 2 sp from previous round, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1* (repeat twice more). Into the first ch 2 sp, make 3 dc, ch 2, slst to to the top of the ch 3. Fasten off but leave an extra long tail for joining.

Joining

•Move the tail of your yarn to the middle of your top right corner to begin joining. (You will only need to move it one stitch over) See the video above for a video tutorial for how I did this, beginning at 3:20.

•With wrong sides together, join the two squares by sewing the adjoining stitches of Round 3 together. Match the stitches to keep the squares even. Each row will contain five squares. You will make six rows in total = 30 squares.

•Join each row to an additional row the same way, matching up stitches and using the long tails for joining.

Border

•Join the white color in any ch 2 space corner, sc all the way around the blanket, ch 1 between the squares. At the four corners make 3 sc.

•For the final border I used the Crochet Blanket Dot Border from Daisy Farm Crafts to make the final border. (tutorial for the border starts at 3:20)
