These sweet, floral granny square bookmarks are a quick and easy project. You can whip up one in no time and in this post I will share exactly how to do it. By choosing different colors you can change the entire look with endless possibilities.

Confession time, I can’t stop crocheting these little floral granny square bookmarks. They work up so quickly and there is an endless number of color combos to choose from. I’ve enjoyed making them in different fibers and weights of yarn to see the difference those choices make.

The idea for the floral granny square bookmark came from Amber, a friend I know locally. On a recent Facebook post ( How to Make a Granny Square) she asked if I could share a tutorial for a floral granny square for a bookmark project she wanted to do.

Immediately my mind started racing with ideas and I got straight to work. This is what I came up with and if you’re fairly new to crochet this is such a wonderful project!

Prerequisites

This project is appropriate for beginners but you do need a few skills to be able to complete these bookmarks:

• slip stitch
• chain
• single crochet
• double crochet
• treble crochet (but only if you are making the sunflower bookmark)

Pattern

In the above video I have demonstrated the entire process, but the written pattern is below. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Round 1

• using color A, ch 4, join with a slp st into the first ch to make a ring
• ch 5 (acts as first dc + ch 2), dc into the ring, ch 2 (7 more times)
• join to the top of the ch 3, fasten off and weave in ends

Round 2

• with color B and working into ch 2 space from previous round ch 3 + 3 dc in the same space, leaving a long loop, take out hook and insert in the top of the ch 3, pull loop through (popcorn stitch) ch 2
• 4 dc in the same space, leaving a long loop, take out hook and insert in the top of the first dc, pull loop through (popcorn st), ch 2
• make 6 more popcorn st with ch 2 space between each
• join to the top of the first ch 3, fasten off and weave in ends

Round 3

• with color C and working into ch 2 space from previous round ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (forms corner) ch 1,
• working into ch 2 space from previous round 3 dc, ch 1 (forms side)
• make a corner into ch 2 space with 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1
• make another side, corner and side
• join to the top of the ch 3, fasten off and weave in ends

To create the sunflower book mark replace the double crochets in round 2 for treble crochets and begin with a chain 4.

Join & Border

I used a single crochet to join the squares together. With wrong sides facing join two granny squares together starting at the right most corner space. Once the yarn is joined, ch 1, acts like the first single crochet. Matching stitch for stitch, single crochet across to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Once all three squares are joined, make a border by staring in a corner space. Once the yarn is joined, ch 1, acts like the first single crochet. Single crochet into each stitch, chain one across the joined squares. To round the corners, single crochet 3. Finish the border by single crochet 2 into the corner you began in, join with a slip st into the original ch 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.
