Simple Holiday Handmade Gift Tags

Sharing is caring!

These simple holiday handmade gift tags will make gift giving extra special this Christmas season. Armed with a hot glue gun and a few materials you likely have on hand, you can create one of a kind tags for every occasion.

My mother-in-law taught me that packaging is part of the gift. She is a true southern belle and is an expert at making simple things beautiful. Elegant wrapping paper, gorgeous bows and handmade gift tags turn ordinary presents into special moments.

Handmade Gift Tags

Whether you are giving handmade or store bought gifts this year, you can add a personal touch to each one. The holidays can be such a hectic time so adding something handmade shows the recipient you care.

You can add tags to gift bags, boxes , or even the items themselves. An adorable handmade gift tag takes a ho-hum present and makes it wowza!

Use What You Have

Doesn’t everyone have a bunch of useless craft supplies lying around your house? If you are like me then the answer is a resounding YAAAAAAASSSS, Queen! Don’t go buy a bunch of materials when you likely have it collecting dust somewhere in your basement.

Things You Can Use

There are so many things you could hot glue onto handmade gift tags to make them special. This year I am using Scrabble tiles to individualize each one with the letter of the recipient’s first name. Then I added ribbon, hand drawn doodles, buttons, pom poms, scrapbook paper, jingle bells, and pinecones to make them look festive.

Look for what you already have on hand. There’s no need to purchase much, if anything at all. The only items you may need to buy are the tags themselves and maybe some twine.

Personalize

I belong to the “more is more” camp, but maybe you like things a bit more simple. Tailor your handmade gift tags to reflect your style and the actual gift. I wanted each of my tags to coordinate with the gift so I chose similar colors.

I mostly went with traditional Christmas colors, but for certain tags I kept a more neutral color palette. You could use blues, whites, and silvers for a wintery look. Pinks and bright greens can look Christmasy as well. Or a soft combination of browns, tans, and whites can create a classic look.

Plan Before You Glue

Before you grab that glue gun, plan out your design for your handmade gift tag by placing the items on the tag to make sure you’re happy with how it looks. Once you add the hot glue it will be close to impossible to fix.

Grab Your Gun…

Your glue gun that is! Once you have it all planned out start hot gluing each piece to your gift tag. Use tweezers to add small pieces to protect your fingers from the hot glue…thanks to a youtube comment for that great tip!

Add Your Handmade Gift Tag

Add the twine to your gift tag and attach it to your present. Watch how it changes your gift from drab to darling!
