Amigurumi Book Recommendation

Sharing is caring!

Sweet Crochet Friends is sure to be a new favorite amigurumi resource. In this amigurumi book recommendation I share the project I crocheted and all the adorable details.

Have you ever been in awe of someone’s talent, like really really impressed? This is exactly how I feel about the wonderfully talented Khuc Cay. I was beyond honored when she asked if I would like to preview her new amigurumi book, Sweet Crochet Friends

I’ve been a big fan of Khuc Cay’s amigurumi designs for quite some time. The first one I ever crocheted was her Kitsu the Fox pattern. His detailed face and unique clothing made him one of my favorite amigurumi projects ever.

The next pattern I tackled was her Pi and Po pigs. Oh my goodness. These two are just too cute. They remind me so much of my husband and I, with his serious face and her expanding waistline. Even more than that, all the instructions are clearly written and there are detailed photos throughout her patterns. So when I heard that Tuva would be publishing a book of her designs I was so excited for her, but also for all of us amigurumi enthusiasts.

What I Love about This Book

Sweet Crochet Friends: 16 Amigurumi Creations from Khuc Cay

Amigurumi Book Recommendation
  1. First, can we just talk about how pretty this book is? I absolutely adore a beautiful book, I think it should be a requirement, I feel very strongly about this. The phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is ridiculous. Of course I’m going to judge the book by its cover. Thankfully, Khuc Cay’s new publication had me at the picture perfect pink cover.
  2. Next there are a whopping sixteen designs. You read that right, sixteen designs and each one is completely adorable. When you take into consideration how much individual patterns sell for on Etsy and Ravelry this book is a total bargain.
  3. Also, the patterns are a mix of animal amigurumi and crocheted dolls. I love that there are both included in the book.
  4. Another fantastic feature is the photography. Every page is brimming with colorful pictures and illustrations. I truly appreciate when a designer takes the time to show exactly what the maker should be trying to accomplish.
  5. Staying true to her unique design aesthetic, each pattern is wonderfully detailed. There are bows and stripes and accessories galore.

Billy the Cat

As a result of all the adorable designs, I had a hard time choosing which one to crochet. Ultimately I chose to make the Billy the Cat pattern because of the new addition in our family. We rescued Olive Francis on Friday, October 4th, 2019. She has become a beloved member of our little household and I could think of nothing more fun that making an amigurumi version of her.

This pattern is so well written, which is consistent with my previous experiences with Khuc Cay’s work. A clearly written pattern combined with adorable design is a win-win on all levels. The Billy the Cat design also includes a basket and fish instructions. How perfect for a hungry little kitty like mine.

Materials

Above all, I am quite finicky about the materials I use to make amigurumi. I have found that good materials help create a toy that I love. I’ve tried using other hooks and yarns and haven’t found any equal to these resources, yet. When or if I do, be sure I will be happy to share with you.

My amigurumi book recommendation reviews the new resource titled Sweet Crochet Friends by Khuc Cay.

The reason I find the Furl’s crochet hook the best for amigurumi is because of its metal construction and pointed tip. It works incredibly well for those invisible decreases. This hook is also ergonomic, which helps with the tendonitis in my elbow that likes to rear its ugly head from time to time.

In addition, Berroco Vintage is my go-to for amigurumi. I seriously love this soft and beautiful yarn. The pigmented and heathered colors enhance each and every toy I make.

Olive the Cat

While Olive the Cat was certainly the inspiration for the new project she has also been a total joy to have around the house. Her mischievous nature coupled with that adorable face have captivated us all. Here she is meeting the crocheted version of herself and it didn’t taker her long to want to play with it. Oh boy. We are in for a lot of trouble, but she’s worth it.

Amigurumi Book Recommendation

Finally, I know that you are going to adore this book. I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t believe it. I am very choosy about which products I share with my readers and I am happy to report that I am giving this book two thumbs up. This amigurumi book recommendation was so much fun and I hope you agree. Let me know some of your favorite amigurumi patterns. I would love to hear from you!
